I am sad to say to that I am officially ending the development of 2.1.0. ReOrg is continuing to work on it but I am not.
I am going to try and explain the reasons behind this decision and I know some of you are going to have strong opinions on this matter. I have never been one to run from disagreements and we have always allowed everyone to express themselves in a positive and constructive way. So lets keep that in mind please when replying to this.
The biggest reason for my stopping it is Nuke is dying. We have been at the forefront of the Nuke world for a few years now. We have seen many things happen in that time and I am proud of what we have accomplished. In fact we are one of the largest nuke sites out there now. But we need to be honest with ourselves, Nuke's days are numbered.
Nuke was built with php 3.x in mind. Security, speed, and functionality were never considered by the original author. So Nuke at it's core is slow, backwards, insecure, and sloppy. Because of this it's also the laughing stock of the php programming and CMS community.
These reasons are why most programmers leave Nuke behind. Think about all those modules and mods by authors out there that don't have sites anymore. Ever wonder why?
When I am on forums with fellow programmers I never mention that I am working on a Nuke CMS. Not because I am not proud of what I have done and this project, but because it always goes the same way. Why are you working with Nuke, it sucks. Then begins a long diatribe about all the issues with Nuke like I don't know. It's so frustrating and common that it is just not worth it.
Why not fix that? Well we have done a number of things to fix that but we have reached a point where we need to rewrite everything in order to improve the system enough to come out of the dark ages and make something people will continue to use. But we are at a crossroads, one that has a big fork in the road. That fork is phpBB. They plan to stop phpBB 2.0.x in Feb 09. This means no more support, fixes, mods, etc. It will be 100% completely stopped.
Why not use phpBB 3.x? Well that would be like putting a Lamborghini body on a VW bug engine. That assumes it will even fit. phpBB 3.x is so different that it would take a long time to make it work. Plus why would we want to do that? Again Nuke at it's core is a mess. All the themes would need to be massively changed and redone (the correct way a theme should be). None of the forum mods would work. The only thing left is the modules and the admin area. I don't think anyone really cares about the admin area and the module would have to have some major changes done to work "correctly".
So about a year and a half ago I started asking why bother? Why not make something new? Something based solely around phpbb 3.x. Thus began the phpbb-evolution project.
But I couldn't just stop working on NE (Nuke-Evolution) until I had a few issues fixed and addressed to help people that wanted to stay with NE while I worked on PE (phpBB-Evolution). 2.1.0 was supposed to be that. Sort of a stop gap between NE and PE. Now with time running out I need to decide what is more important NE or PE. For the community and for myself I feel PE is. We have to be ready to except the fact that maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next year, but at some point Nuke will not be a viable option anymore and we have to be ready with something to fill that void.
I know some of you are FREAKING out. But let's be honest Nuke-Evolution is not going to up and die tomorrow. I won't let it. But I am not going to work on anymore future versions with the exception of patching and fixing v2.0.7 on an as needed basis. I will be working on phpBB-Evolution instead and trying my hardest to get it done by later this year or early next year. After that point I will discuss NE project and what to do with it with everyone involved.
Thank you to everyone that worked on the project and everyone that beta tested it. I wish the news was better but I need to stop dragging my feet and move on. I am sorry. |

i agree and i think it is important to move on with phpbb3 , it will suck when there's not going to be any new mods or support/fixes for phpbb2
i think that 2.0.7 will still be used for a while even after PE would be released. |

v2.0.7 will have plenty of life in it,v2.1.0 may happen but phpbb-evolution is the way forward.I have to say that before people make a judgement on your decission they should know that for quite alot of time before the release of v2.0.6/7 there was alot of time put in to try and get v2.1.0 working as evo user's have come to expect but due to the ammount of work that would still need to be put in,it would have taken you and others away from v3,Hence the testing and release of v2.0.7 which does include the security enhancements from v2.1.0.
Lets hope everyone will understand and support this decission as this will keep evo (probably) the best FREE cms there is. |

| Well now, I have to say that im not surprised in the least by this development. Only thing I can say Tech is most of us supported the move from PNP to NE, and we will support the move from NE to PE. You have never steared the nuke community wrong and have been on the forefront for along time. So I for one will have no issues what so ever following you over to a new platform, its more then about time for this move. I can almost be positive once the shock of this is over just about everyone will support the move and be over on the new site....asking when its going to be done LOL..We're all here cause of you and the development teams you have built and lead, and we will be there on the PE site just the same. |

I hate to see Nuke go because well mainly for nostalgia reasons but I welcome the change because as stated Nuke is dying and I would rather abandon the cms titanic than drown to death in the freezing waters of inferior coding.
So sad to see you go Nuke since you were my introduction into CMS's at version 5.6...but eh you aren't taking me down with you.
I actually left Nuke for a long time when found out how rugged and messy it was but came back on the last legs of PNP and the launch of NE so I guess maybe I should have just stayed away completely lol
No matter...I'll be on the bb3vo ship...in fact I'll break the champagne bottle. |

| I understand and I am sad like you Tec in taking this decision, I saw recently a decline of interest despite nuke-evolution has been in recent years the number 1. I accept your decision, although I am disappointed that I could still give, perhaps deaf and Czech and conscious that this sooner or later would have happened. Your motives are fair and are the best that a great attitude like you could give, are not okay but in having wanted to release the 2.0.7 that end it has issued a new version if this is the last and if even if more developed compared to the previous year is still fix? See tonight I was just came on the forum for post a fix for 2.0.7, a problem already solved with 2.0.5 and I read this story. You can imagine what my discomfort and how much time I should continue. phpBB-Evolution is a good project, and I think I can give my contribution, perhaps it will give if you want but at this moment are just very angry. Sorry but what I think. |

I've been here since before the project went public.. 1st as a beta back with Techno's platinum site.. and then here as a beta until last year when I found I was bored with Nuke. Just too many things I wanted to do that I couldn't. But.. All my sites are Still Evo (2.0.7 but one that 's 2.1.0 beta) because there was nothing better out there!!!
Been great.. been a pain.. and it's been fun (or not) all along the way! The Evo Team has always been top notch and I suspect it will stay so when the new project starts up! |
